The ninjas of orthodontics

Lingual close up

Lingual braces were first introduced in the 1970s. They are still the most discreet way to straighten teeth, and they just keep getting better.

Lingual braces work like traditional fixed braces, using brackets and wires to align your teeth. But, unlike traditional braces, the brackets and wires are hidden away behind your teeth.

Some lingual braces feature custom-made brackets and wires. These help your braces to fit the (more irregular) surfaces on the back of your teeth. They also provide your orthodontist with greater control for outstanding results.

During your treatment, we’ll see you every 6–10 weeks to adjust your braces and check everything’s moving in the right direction. As your braces aren’t visible, you’ll be able to clearly see your smile improving day by day.

When you finish treatment, retainers help to keep your teeth in their new, straighter position. We’ll give you fixed or removable retainers to help maintain your straight smile into the future.

Are lingual braces right for me?

Your orthodontic treatment will be tailored to you:

  • Lingual braces are versatile and can be used to treat most misalignments and bite problems. If you’re bothered by crowding or spaces that show when you smile, we can fit your braces just behind your front teeth
  • Lingual braces are equally good at treating more complicated concerns. These include teeth that protrude, severely rotated teeth, and teeth that don’t bite together correctly.
  • Lingual braces are fixed to your teeth throughout your treatment, so you won’t be able to remove them. They work hard, 24/7 and there’s no chance of them going missing.
  • Because of the location of your braces, you may find that they irritate your tongue at first fit. They can temporarily affect your speech as any orthodontic treatment can when first introduced. This will pass as your mouth gets used its new addition.

What are the benefits of lingual braces?

These undercover braces have a lot going for them:

  • They’re invisible. Even friends and family will struggle to spot them.
  • They’re great at straightening teeth. They work in the same way as our favourite fixed braces.
  • They’re custom made. Your brackets and wires will fit your teeth perfectly to provide your orthodontist with precise control.
  • They’re available in gold. This can make them feel less like braces and more like jewellery for your teeth.
